National Artist Ang Kiukok reimagines the human body into fragmented distorted shapes in this 1978 oil on canvas masterpiece. Sharpened and constricted in its pose, the subject serves as a visceral metaphor for the reality in which Ang took inspiration from. The use of strong tones of flesh and interlocking geometric lines exacerbate the gripping imagery of stolid purposefullness and strength of character. Using the rigidness of the abstract geometric style to explore his powerful themes - the boldness in his artistic choice brought both commercial and critical success to the otherwise reserved artist.
Accompanying this work is an equally stellar provenance, having been commissioned by Jose Molano, the husband of Celia Molano, who introduced her husband to the artist.
